What's mindfulness got to do with being emotionally intelligent?

As a mindset coach, I have seen firsthand the positive effect with clients that mindfulness can have on their emotional intelligence . Recent research supports this, in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology which found that mindfulness training can improve emotional intelligence by increasing self-awareness and empathy.

Emotional intelligence involves understanding and using our emotions to communicate and relate well with others. Experts suggest that it is more important than IQ for success in life.

Mindfulness involves being present in the moment, without judgment, and aware of our thoughts and feelings. The practice of observing without judgment is a key to managing emotions.

As adults, we often lose the ability to describe our feelings, but mindfulness can help us redevelop this awareness. When we recognise our emotions as they arise, we can better manage them and respond to others in a more empathetic and compassionate way.

Some of the reasons for anxiety or depression is that we suppress or dwell on emotions rather than just enjoying the sweet moment that is being totally in the present.

Practising mindfulness regularly can change this. For example, if you receive feedback that you don't agree with - say from a boss, friend or partner - mindfulness can help you become aware of any negative emotions. Instead of saying something you regret, being mindful means taking a moment to pause and reflect before responding. We can then calm or change our emotions and respond in a more constructive way. No regrets!

Here are some tips:

1. Practicing mindfulness is simple and only takes a few minutes. Focusing on your breath while observing your thoughts and feelings without judgment can be a good starting point. Start with a few moments and extend a little gradually.

2. Consistency is key, so try to practice at the same time each day to develop the habit.

3. Practice self-compassion by being kind to yourself as you develop this skill.

4. Journaling about your emotions can also be helpful.

By becoming more aware of our own emotions, we can better regulate them and respond in a more compassionate way to others. Give mindfulness a try and see how it can positively impact your life.
